Types of Fence in Birmingham, AL: Which One Suits Your Yard?

Birmingham Quality Fence installs every common residential type, and choosing between them is really about answering one question first: what is the fence for?

A fence that keeps a dog in, a fence that screens a neighbour’s deck, a fence that marks a boundary and a fence that meets pool safety code are four different jobs, and the material that suits one is often wrong for another.

Cost matters too, and in this market it spans a wide range — from around $15 per linear foot for chain link to $65 for ornamental aluminium.

Below is each type with what it costs, how long it lasts, what it takes to maintain, and the job it actually suits.

Fence Types in Birmingham, AL

Wood Privacy

$25 to $45 per linear foot at six feet. The default choice for privacy in this market and the most common fence we install. The city's Birmingham permits and fence FAQ covers fence permits, height limits, and where chain link is allowed.

Full screening, a look that suits most Birmingham houses, and it can be stained any colour you like. Pressure-treated pine lasts 15 to 20 years, cedar much the same.

The cost is maintenance. Left unsealed in our humidity it greys, then splits, then rots at the ground contact points. Sealing on a regular cycle is what gets it to the top of that range — our fence staining and sealing page covers the schedule.

Vinyl Privacy

$35 to $60 per linear foot at six feet. Roughly forty percent more than wood up front, and around 50 years of service against 15 to 20.

No painting, no staining, no rot, and it does not care about humidity. Cleaning it once a year is essentially the whole maintenance programme.

The trade-offs: colour is chosen at manufacture and cannot be changed, a damaged panel is replaced rather than repaired, and some people simply prefer how wood looks. It also does not take heat and impact quite like wood — a tree limb through vinyl breaks it rather than cracking it.

Aluminium Ornamental

$35 to $65 per linear foot. The choice when you want a boundary and a look rather than a screen.

It lasts 50 years or more, does not rot or rust the way iron does, and needs almost nothing. It is the standard answer for pool enclosures because it meets safety requirements while still letting you see through.

It provides no privacy at all, which is the point. If you want to see out and keep children or pets in, this is the category.

Chain Link

$15 to $25 per linear foot at four feet. The most economical way to enclose an area.

Durable, low maintenance, and it does the containment job as well as anything. Vinyl-coated versions in black or green are considerably less industrial-looking than bare galvanised and worth the small premium for a residential yard.

No privacy, and it will not satisfy an HOA that specifies otherwise. For a back yard boundary, a dog run, or a large rural perimeter where footage is the dominant cost, it is hard to beat.

Specialist Types

Farm and Ranch

Long runs on acreage where cost per foot dominates everything else — field fence, barbed wire, or high-tensile depending on what is being contained. See our farm and ranch fencing page.

Pool Safety

Pool enclosures are governed by code — height, gaps between pickets, ground clearance, and self-closing self-latching gates. This is not a place to improvise, because a non-compliant enclosure is both a liability and a failed inspection. Our pool safety compliance page covers the requirements.

Security and Commercial

Heavier gauge, greater height, and often anti-climb detailing. Different specification from anything residential — see commercial fencing.

Choosing by Job

  • Screening a neighbour or a road — wood or vinyl privacy
  • Containing a dog — chain link, or aluminium if looks matter
  • Pool enclosure — aluminium, built to code
  • Marking a boundary without blocking the view — aluminium ornamental
  • Largest area for the smallest budget — chain link
  • Install once and forget it — vinyl or aluminium
  • Matching a period house — wood, stained rather than painted

Things That Apply Whatever You Choose

Posts and footings determine whether a fence stays upright, and they are invisible in a finished quote. Spacing, post size and footing depth are worth asking about explicitly — our fence post repair work exists almost entirely because of fences built cheaply on this point.

Know your property line before anyone digs, and check HOA rules and municipal height limits before ordering material. Both are cheaper to resolve beforehand than afterwards.
